Happy Monday everybody! I hope you’re as excited as I am to unveil the brand new Stacy Makes Cents. Several weeks in the making, we’ve made some big changes around here on both the stuff you can see – and the stuff you can’t. All in all, we expect the blog to run faster, be easier to navigate, and easier to share with your friends. So after weeks of HTML, CSS and Photoshop, here it is!
I know it looks a little different than the old site, but take heart! Today’s post is your guided tour. You’ll have the hang of things in no time.
We’ve made things as simple as possible. Everything is now in three major categories: Mommy, Frugal Housewife and In the Kitchen.
Plus we’ve added a few extra items for easier navigation on some more common pages. If you hold your mouse over some of the links at the top of the page, you’ll find that some have sub-menus or a category index. I especially encourage you to check out the Whole Foods Recipe Index, as it now is broken down by meal and a few other helpful ways.
One of the features we’re really excited about with the new Stacy Makes Cents is the Resources page, accessible from the header menu. We’re asked all the time how we do what we do. On this page, we’ve laid it all out for you. Who hosts the site, what platforms we use, how we advertise, and all kinds of other good resources you might want to see, whether you’re a blogger or simply a casual reader with a curious mind.
I’ve been using Instagram and Google+ a lot more recently, so now you have more options to connect with me on social media, directly from the Stacy Makes Cents home page. If you’re not already a part of the conversation in these communities, I invite you to join me!
I’ve added some really cool new search tools that I think will help anyone looking for content on SMC. For the basic search box, I just couldn’t beat Google. So if you want to find something on SMC, one of the easiest ways is just to search for it in the search bar at the top. If you want to be more specific, scroll to the VERY BOTTOM of the site and you’ll find three BRAND NEW archive options: archive by date, category and author. If I’ve written about it, with one of those four tools you should be able to find it!
Reading Posts & Commenting
There’s not a lot new going on in the article window, except the look is a little cleaner and prettier. The comment form is now above the existing comments, which should help if you want to interact – you won’t have as much scrolling to do. At the bottom of each post, we kept the “Related Posts” to help you find other articles that might be of interest and the various icons to share articles with friends.
One new addition that we’re really pleased to release is a “sticky” menu bar at the top. If you’re reading an article way down on the page and want to go back home or return to the top of the page, it is as simple as clicking the appropriate option on the menu that should always float at the top when the standard navigation menu disappears.
Want to get your daily dose of Stacy? Sign up for my daily emails. After you’ve done that, you can check out my sponsors (please do check them out – they’re awesome), catch my Twitter feed, learn more about us and our family, look at what I’m pinning, and a myriad of other fun things. If you’re not into reading an article when you visit, maybe you should peruse the sidebar for something that tickles your fancy.
At the bottom of the site I’ve added what I think are three key resources missing from the previous site:
- Most Popular Posts – Want to know what the world’s favorite SMC article is? Here’s a handy list.
- Daily Email Sign-up – I’ve always had this form at the top of the site, but if you’re like me, you might not want to sign up until you see what somebody has to offer. Well…if you’re one of those people (“those people” – HA!) I’ve saved you some scrolling.
- Archives – I mentioned earlier that there are now more ways to find previously-written content. As of today’s launch date, we’re still tweaking these a bit, but you will be able to find any/all articles by category, date or author. So if you want to find what I thought about something a few years ago, now you can.
On Your Tablet or Phone?
The new Stacy Makes Cents is responsive, which means it is smart enough to know whether you’re browsing from your computer, tablet or phone and adjust its look slightly to match the screen you’re on. So if you’re browsing on your fancy iPhone, scroll around a bit and you’ll find everything is still there – it just got re-ordered to make your life a little easier. One important thing you might ask on some devices is, “where is the menu?” – tap the little “three line” icon in the upper left and you’ll see all the menu options. We did it this way to save you some screen real estate on those smaller screens.
Help Me Out
Inevitably when a new site is unveiled there are issues. I’m sure Barry missed something glaringly obvious (or maybe it was me?), so if you find something is broken, odd looking (other than my photo), or just flat doesn’t seem to act like you think it should, let us know! Fill out the contact form and let us know we need to work on something…and thanks in advance for your help!
One Last Thing
Now that you’ve learned how to use my site, come back tomorrow for my first all-new post! Until then, you should head over to my friend Erinn’s site, where I’m posting a recipe today for my version of Russian Dressing.
