2012: Year in Review

Well, we’ve almost made it to the end of another year.  And to think that only 9 days ago the world was supposed to end. HA!  I will, in faith, claim that most of us will make it another couple of days to ring in 2013.  That being the case, let’s take a look back at the good and bad of 2012 and then look forward to what 2013 holds.

2012 can be easily measured for the Myers family by milestones.  I’m not sure I’ve ever experienced so many HUGE events in my lifetime.

January

February

  • We rented a storage unit and opted to spend a couple of months with Stacy’s parents since our house sold so quickly.
  • My brother-in-law fell off a roof and broke nearly every bone in his body.  Thankfully he has gone from immobile to wheelchair to walker to cane, and can now handle most walking without assistance.

March

  • The sale of our townhouse closed (whew) and we were officially homeless with a lot of cash in the bank.
  • We spent virtually every free minute planning for a new baby and looking for a house within our budget.  We found a house and made an offer that was FINALLY accepted.

April

  • I went to Las Vegas.  I spent a few days at Front Sight Firearms Training Institute and a couple more perusing the strip and spending some time with family I hadn’t seen in YEARS.  I showed them how much they meant to me by destroying their doorbell system.  Oops.
  • Stacy stayed home (she wouldn’t get on a plane) to work on the final details of our home purchase.

May

  • We released Stacy’s first music video: “I’m Debt Free and I Know It”, a parody of “I’m Sexy and I Know It.”
  • We closed on our new home, paying 100% cash for it.  Since we knew there was a lot of work to do, we recorded a video walkthrough of it so you could see the “before” where we started.  We agreed that we’d release an “after” video in May 2013.

June

  • We spent hours (days) working in the new house.  Wiring, plumbing, carpentry, cleaning – you name it – we did it.  A few friends came over to help (THANK YOU) and we made some major headway.
  • I was offered and accepted a new job as the Marketing Manager for Strongwell, a large manufacturer in our area.  It has been an excellent transition and wonderful fit for our family.
  • My dad was killed in a car accident.  This was the hardest day of 2012 for me.

July

 August

  • We welcomed Andy into the world!
  • We had our heat pump installed!  For those of you who have lived with temps of 90+ with no air conditioning, you know why I included this as a milestone.

September

  • Adjusting to parenting with two small children isn’t easy.
  • Jake and Jamey (Stacy’s sister) tied the knot.  Stacy did awesome as maid of honor and Annie was a cutie pie as the flower girl.  We all survived the heat (even 1-week-old Andy) and had an awesome day.

October

  • Stacy went to Allume, taking Andy and her introversion along for the ride.  Stacy seeing all her friends from the blogosphere was priceless.  I think they set an annual tradition of meeting somewhere each year.  That’s cool with me.
  • I spent most of the month finishing up projects around the house and helping Stacy maintain her sanity with two little ones demanding more than her full attention.

November

  • After a lengthy police investigation, the woman who hit Dad and Brian in June was criminally charged.
  • Stacy’s long-awaited book, “Crock On!” was released to a bigger-than-I-expected fanfare! J  You guys are awesome!
  • Annie was sick on Thanksgiving so I stayed home with her while Stacy had lunch with her family, then she stayed home while I went to supper with my family.  Not exactly our plan for the holiday, but I am glad we could see our respective families and still care for Annie.

December

  • Not guilty.”
  • Crock On!” came out in print (limitedly) and for the Kindle and Nook.
  • Christmas was a whirlwind of visits with family, food, gifts and way too little sleep.  We celebrated the birth of our savior and survived all the chaos.

Well there you have it.  As you can see, 2012 has been a long year with a lot going on with the Myers family.  We’ve had major ups and major downs.  As I’ve said in both of those cases, God has been so good to us that I can’t explain how blessed we are.  Through it all, you’ve been along for the ride, helping Stacy Makes Cents grow immensely.  By sharing our lives with you, you have in turn granted us the blessing of your support, encouragement (and occasional bashing – some of those comments are way out there!) and so as 2012 comes to a close and we venture into 2013, I leave you with this:

Yesterday can be an easy excuse to avoid doing something today but you’ll never get anywhere until you decide on a direction and get started.  If there’s something you didn’t do in 2012, don’t let that be an excuse – pick your direction for 2013 and get to it!

Wow, I read that and all I could do was think of all that in one year. We have had one year that was like that, pant pant, we were so thankful that God was our comfort and help during those times.

PS If you want to give an update tour early I wouldn’t complain. lol

    • Barry

If we finish the house sooner than May we may post a new video. We’ve finished the inside but I still have some serious landscaping work to do. Not our forte, but still hoping to make it look good by the 1 year mark.

      • J

I so understand, I was just kidding. It will be two years since we bought this house in August and we are only 1/4 the way finished with all that needs to be done. Nothing that money won’t fix. (lol) Anyhoo, I think everyone we have ever known has come to visit and the house is still in parts. Sigh I do hope they will return to see the completed version and vision.

Despite many quality posts I am unsubscribing. I do not wish to be associated with any private person who uses guns or promotes gun ownership. May the children rest in peace.

    • Barry

I understand there are numerous differing viewpoints on gun ownership and I won’t argue which is right for you. I hate to learn that you’re unsubscribing so I’d like to explain. My father was a state police officer for 36 years, my grandfather was in the military and my family still owns a security company my other grandfather founded. So while I may be a “private citizen,” I believe it is essential that I am well-versed in gun law and well trained in the responsible use of a firearm. I’m not sure which is worse – someone carrying a gun with no clue of how to use it or someone well trained who has malicious intent. As a responsible gun owner, it is my responsibility to avoid either of those camps.

I have only been reading your blog for a short time. I congratulate you on your use of the Second Ammendment and understanding of the importance gun knowledge. This country was founded on private citizens with knowledge, understanding and common sense and your willingness to better your gun knowlede has made me a subscriber! I dont always agree with all of your posts, but I keep reading because I would rather keep an open mind and try to be a better, more sympathetic and knowledgeable person. I’m from Montana and my family has farmed and ranched for over 100 years. I dont agree with food labels, so this is usually were I disagree with most blogs. I do, however very much appreciate your saving money tips and tricks and recipes and hope to learn more from you in 2013.

      • Sandy

Barry while it is sad what happened with the children, you are doing nothing wrong by owning a gun. You and Stacy are an inspiration to us all.

      • http://stayathomefarmermom.blogspot.com Tracy Nault

There is no shame in owning guns. We have several. Some are used for hunting and one is used for protecting our home and family. Guns did not kill those children. A very sick human did. Guns in the wrong hands are of the utmost danger to our safety but taking away our right to own them only makes it easier for the criminal element to take over.

You and your family have had quite a year, both good and bad and I am so glad that you shared it all with us.
Here’s to hoping you have a very happy and healthy 2013.

        • Barry

Thanks, Tracy. I’m looking forward to what 2013 holds.

    • Julia

Then I guess we should ban cars also? They kill innocent children everyday too.

  • http://Day2dayjoys.com Rachel @ day2day joys

You all had quite a year and I’m glad to support you guys and glad to call you friends! Blessings to y’all in 2013!

    • Barry

Thanks, Rachel. I know you’re pretty good to us too.

  • Jenny K.

I enjoy reading your blog. Thanks for sharing your lives with us & of course all the great financial advise! I have tried several of Stacy’s recipes & love them! May God continue to bless your family in 2013! Looking forward to another year of great blog post from you all! :)

    • Barry

Thanks. Blessings to all of us in 2013!

  • Nicole

Happy New Year! I look forward to another year of wonderful posts. Thank you for letting us into your family, thoughts, kitchen, and beliefs. I am intrigued about the Not Guilty link above. However, it links me to the same article as ‘criminally charged.’ Am I doing something wrong? Thoughts and prayers to your family :-)

    • Stacy

Hey Nicole, sorry about that. I fixed the link. It is the news story about how she plead ‘not guilty.’

  • Andrea R

Thanks so much for your honesty & especially your humor! I always “leave” this blog with such a sense of hope! We’ve had an eventful year too- the birth of our 3rd child, who unexpectedly spent his 1st week in the NICU, my husband started a new job, we listed our house & it sold in 24 hours, and most importantly, I gave my life to Christ & was baptized (at the ripe old age of 34!). Looking forward to 2013.

    • Stacy

CONGRATULATIONS on an awesome experience of faith! It sounds like you’ve had a banner year. I think everybody I’ve talked to is looking forward to 2013.

  • Rebekah

Stacy/Barry – I joined your blog this year and as a Christian I find your humor refreshing and your recipes amazing and your honesty about life, hope and our freedoms – something that we can all learn to do better. God bless you and your precious family. Our family has also known loss of family members and my prayers go out to you for the healing of your wounded hearts. God is faithful and will continue to be your greatest Comfort.

    • Barry

Thanks for that great comment! It always brings a smile to my face to read that what we do brings true value to the lives of others. And we’ll take prayers ANY DAY!

  • Christine

I just saw the music video for the first time- LOVE IT!! Happy New Year and God bless.

    • Stacy

LOL It still makes me giggle.
